1Lesson 1 — Poetry Analysis Framework (SIFT)

Every poem question in Paper 2 rewards the SIFT method: Structure, Imagery, Figurative language, Tone. For 'Felix Randal' by Hopkins, note the sonnet structure (octave / sestet), imagery of illness and iron, the metaphor 'child, Felix, poor Felix Randal' revealing tenderness, and a tone that shifts from professional detachment to grief. Always quote and then EXPLAIN the effect — quoting alone is 0 marks.

2Lesson 2 — Writing the Discursive Essay

A discursive essay presents multiple viewpoints without taking sides — different from argumentative. Structure: introduction defining the issue, 2 body paragraphs FOR, 2 body paragraphs AGAINST, balanced conclusion. Use linkers: 'On the other hand', 'However', 'In contrast'. A markable intro hooks with a question or statistic; a markable conclusion synthesises without simply repeating.

3Lesson 3 — Summary Skills (Paper 1)

The summary question is worth 10 marks: 7 for content (7 points, 1 mark each), 3 for language. Rules: use your own words as far as possible, single paragraph, count and state the word count, stay within 90 words (±10%). Never copy phrases longer than 4 words verbatim. Practice: read the passage twice, underline exactly 7 distinct ideas, then paraphrase each in under 12 words.
