1Lesson 1 — DNA Replication (Semi-conservative)
DNA replication is semi-conservative: each new molecule contains one original strand and one newly-synthesised strand. Steps: (1) helicase unwinds the double helix, (2) DNA polymerase adds complementary nucleotides (A–T, C–G) to each strand, (3) two identical DNA molecules result. Meselson–Stahl proved this using ¹⁵N-labelled DNA in 1958. In the exam, ALWAYS mention the enzymes helicase and DNA polymerase to score full marks.
2Lesson 2 — The Human Nervous System
A reflex arc consists of: receptor → sensory neuron → interneuron (in spinal cord) → motor neuron → effector. The reflex bypasses the brain, which is why pulling your hand off a hot stove happens BEFORE you feel pain. Synaptic transmission uses neurotransmitters (e.g., acetylcholine) released across the synaptic cleft. Learn the diagram — it is asked almost every year.
3Lesson 3 — Natural Selection & Evolution
Darwin's theory in four steps: (1) variation exists within a population, (2) more offspring are produced than can survive, (3) individuals with favourable traits are more likely to survive and reproduce, (4) over generations, favourable traits become more common. Example: peppered moths in industrial Britain — dark morphs increased when tree bark darkened with soot.
